Dating back more than 4,000 years, Chinese green tea diet has been long revered as a tasty drink that can ward off diseases and improve one’s well-being. There are only a few herbs that can surpass its impressive history.
Since its first recorded use during the time of Emperor Shen Nung, the link between Chinese green tea diet and good health has never been severed. Today, further studies are made to test the benefits of the remarkable health elixir.
Traditional Health Benefits of the Diet
According to tradition, this diet could cure anything from headaches, body aches, and pains to constipation and depression. Over the centuries, more health claims are made on account of the Chinese green tea diet.
It detoxifies the body. The presence of polyphenols, a naturally occurring antioxidant in this particular tea, is said to combat harmful free radicals and help keep the body free from diseases. In this regard, Chinese green tea helps maintain the overall well-being of the body. It fights against the anti-aging process because the antioxidants can boost immunity, preserve young-looking skin, and brighten the eyes.
Additional health benefits of the green tea is it increases the blood flow throughout the body. Because it contains a little caffeine, ingesting this drink stimulates the heart and allows the blood to flow more freely through the blood vessels. For the same reason that tea stimulates blood flow, it also stimulates mental clarity.
For many years, men of science remained skeptical about the health claims made by Chinese green tea diet enthusiasts because the health benefits are truly vast in number. Their doubt was changed to a more positive reception when subsequent researchers proved its disease-preventing attributes and confirmed most of the health claims.
The Heart
Study after study has shown that drinking green tea and eating polyphenol-rich foods reduces the risk of any heart complications. It helps strengthen the blood vessels that provide oxygen and valuable nutrients to the heart and brain. It has also been researched that men who use the diet have a 75 percent less possibility of having a stroke than those who don’t use the diet.
The green tea diet helps lower total cholesterol levels and improve the ratio between LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. Study shows that men who drink nine or more cups of Chinese green tea daily have lower cholesterol levels than those who drink fewer than two cups. While nine cups may seem a lot, break it up through out the day and you’ll realize it’s not that difficult to drink that many cups. You could have one during and after each meal and during your breaks.

Longevity
The role of the ‘Chinese diet’ in promoting longevity has been investigated upon by many researchers. They found the premise of their study on observing Japanese women who are greater-than-average green tea drinkers; have lower mortality rates compared to others. This led the researchers to believe that the diet has “a protective factor against premature death.”
The polyphenols found in the diet may be held accountable. With its high amount of polyphenols, it seems to have a stimulating effect on the immune system. A stronger immune system as a result of drinking the green tea helps reduce risks of obtaining many illnesses.
If these health benefits of doing the Chinese green tea diet don’t motivate you to start drinking this miracle in a cup, chances are you’ll never become motivated to loose weight. So start today and drink up. The health benefits go well beyond weight loss!
In midst of the diverse socio-cultural land of America, experience of minorities with their historical visages has always been rendered execrably pathetic with their health rates deteriorating with each passing decade.
Many social factors like racial subjugation, poverty and inaccessibility of government resources are rendering them more vulnerable as compared to people belonging to other communities.
In-spite of having highest level of health problems, members belonging to minority racial groups are least inclined in utilizing health services. Recognizing this fact, National Institute of Health time and again announces grants to induce organizations dealing with the health related issues among minorities to reach their doors imbibing in them importance of health care and maintenance. Promotion of health among males was one of their initiatives making racial and ethnic minority males as their target.
This funding opportunity was opened for those who proposed to expand the research towards the health of minority men. The research had to be conducted to increase understanding of socio-demographic, social and cultural factors responsible for the deteriorating health rate among males and their subpopulations. Its other purpose was catering to the applications, which had been imploring upon the development and testing of health promoting devices to reduce health disparities among the racially and ethnic diverse populations.
The total project period announced was of two years with direct costs allowed up to
$275,000 over an R21 two-year period, with not more than $200,000 as direct costs was allowed to spend in one year.
Applicants could also request for the direct costs of up to $25,000 modules, with the direct costs limitation of $275,000 in a combined two-year award period. Applicants had to follow the policies as described in the NIH Grants Policy Statement.
Any public/State Controlled sectors or institutions of Higher education referred as Nonprofit status with 501(c)(3) IRS Status or Nonprofit without 501(c)(3) IRS Status and many small businessmen or profit oriented organizations, any state government, tribal government or any other organizations or institutions working for the upliftment of the minorities were deemed eligible for the grants to carry on with the said project.
Even individuals having skills or knowledge and necessary resources to move forward with the proposed project were also invited to work along with his/her organization and individuals having disabilities were also applicable to apply.
For the sex related diseases too, there was a grant proposal to evaluate Locally Developed (Homegrown) HIV Prevention Interventions for African-American and Hispanic/Latino Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM). The grant for the same was announced on 27th January 2009.
Long-term effects-If you are regular having high amount of alcohol intake it may increase the risk of liver diseases and cancer. Regular having more than two drinks a day may increases the risk of developing alcoholism, alcoholic liver disease, and some forms of cancer. Having between one to two alcoholic drinks a day has been shown to have positive effects on health, unless contraindicated, chiefly because of its cardiovascular effects.
Short-term effects- Alcohol supplies some effects on body that shows in very short period of time. Alcohol, specifically ethanol, is a potent central nervous system depressant with a range of side effects. The amount and circumstances of consumption play a large part in determining the extent of intoxication and for example, if you consume alcohol after a heavy meal is less likely to produce visible signs of intoxication than consumption on an empty stomach. Hydration also plays a role, especially in determining the extent of hangovers
How alcohol travels- Alcohol is metabolized extremely quickly by the body. Unlike foods, which require time for digestion, alcohol needs no digestion and is quickly absorbed. About 20 percent is absorbed directly across the walls of an empty stomach and can reach the brain within one minute. Once alcohol reaches the stomach, it begins to break down with the alcohol dehydrogenate enzyme. This process reduces the amount of alcohol entering the blood by approximately 20%. In addition, about 10% of the alcohol is expelled in the breath and urine.
Alcohol and pregnancy-Women that drink heavily during pregnancy are at risk of having babies with a condition called fetal alcohol syndrome. This can result in growth deficiencies, nervous system problems, lowered intelligence, and facial abnormalities in the child. It is also called fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and all the symptoms are not always present and can vary in how serious they are.
Health affects of alcohol consumption-Taking alcohol in regular manner affects very badly on health. Several recent studies have examined the health effects of alcohol and for many people, moderate consumption appears beneficial. The largest study to date to look at the relationship between alcohol consumption and mortality found that those who drank one drink a day had a 20% lower death rate from all causes compared to nondrinkers. For deaths due just too cardiovascular diseases, the death rates were 30-40% lower for those reporting at least one drink daily compared to nondrinkers.
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most commonly reported work-related disorders in Dallas, Houston, throughout Texas, and across the United States. Although studies are still out, those most affected seem to be employees with jobs that require long-term repetitive movements, particularly those working with small hand tools or using computer keyboards on a regular basis.
Women are more likely to be diagnosed with CTS than men, and though it is highly suspected many young people suffer from the condition, those between the ages of forty and sixty are the most commonly diagnosed. Those with health insurance are also more likely to be treated.
CTS is a painful syndrome caused by pressure on the median nerve of the wrist, which runs through a passageway called the carpal tunnel. This syndrome affects the musculoskeletal structures of the upper extremity, and often results in pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness in the hands and/or wrist. Further symptoms include increased tingling or pain at night, a feeling of uselessness or weakness in the fingers, decreased ability to squeeze objects, loss of strength in the muscles at the base of the hand, and shooting pain up the arm, sometimes as far as the shoulder. In severe cases, partial paralysis may occur.
It’s been difficult to diagnose in the past, and therefore difficult for many in Texas and across the U.S. to get treatment covered by individual health insurance. Cities like Austin, Houston and Dallas, though, now have more easily accessible pain centers, which specialize in diagnosing the syndrome through physical examinations and specialized scans, like MRIs.
CTS is garnering more attention in the medical and business communities in Texas due to its ability to incapacitate valuable workers, not to mention the pain and suffering it causes.
“It’s a tough call,” sighed Mike* after a long day. “I hurt all the time now. I have to start considering surgery or something. Otherwise, I’m not going to be able to work.”
Mike was diagnosed with CTS several months ago, and is increasingly worried about his ability to maintain his income as a self-employed production artist. “I don’t have health insurance, so if I can get out of doing the surgery, I will. It seems so drastic anyway.”
The trouble with carpal tunnel syndrome is that the longer the condition goes untreated, the higher the chances of permanent damage. And like any disease, CTS is statistically less likely to be diagnosed and treated without health insurance coverage. Mike’s story is not particularly rare. Over 25% of people in Texas went uninsured in 2005, far exceeding the national average of 15.9%. Rates are higher for the self-employed. What this translates into is 46.6 million Americans going without health insurance, 5.4 million more than in 2001 the recession year. Mike can’t afford treatment, but he can’t afford not to get treated, either.
Fortunately, there are less expensive options than surgery, and Texas offers a wide variety of choices, particularly in urban centers like Austin, Dallas and Houston. Pain centers specializing in carpal tunnel syndrome are excellent resources.
The first step, of course, is reducing the symptoms of the condition in hopes that, with time, those symptoms may be eliminated. These are free or low-cost measures that do not require individual health insurance policies. High caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol intake are contributing factors; those suspecting they have CTS should eliminate or reduce these as much as possible. Food allergies may exacerbate, or even cause, some of these symptoms as well, and common triggers include dairy, canola oil, and wheat/gluten products.
Some health practitioners believe dehydration also aggravates the problem. The earliest stages of dehydration don’t exhibit immediately recognizable signs, and mild dehydration may only cause headaches or fatigue. Many practitioners in Texas predict Americans with busy lifestyles, caffeine drinks, and high stress go slightly dehydrated on a daily basis. Dehydration impairs body functions, including the ability to supply proper nourishment to the extremities, which, of course, only makes CTS worse. Upping healthy fluid intake alone may reduce the severity of the disease.
Other symptom-reducing measures include stretching or flexing the hands, wrists, and arms before and during repetitive movements, reducing such movements to a bare minimum, using a wrist splint for four to six weeks, modifying tasks to reduce pressure on the wrists, and, whenever possible, using CTS-friendly equipment, such as wrist rests, and adjustable keyboards, tables, and chairs. A study of library managers conducted at Texas A&M found promising results for preventing or reducing symptoms of the condition after modifying work surfaces.
Nutrition is also of utmost importance. In fact, some in the medical community believe carpal tunnel syndrome is actually caused by a deficiency of B-6, made worse by repetitive movement. Positive results have been achieved for those in Texas and across the United States by administering 100mg of B-6 daily. Other dietary recommendations include taking a high-quality multi-vitamin which should include antioxidant vitamins A, C, E, and D, and the trace minerals magnesium, calcium, zinc, and selenium. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oils, have been shown to reduce inflammation associated with CTS, as has Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and Resveratrol (from red wine).
Green tea, milk thistle, bromelain, turmeric, and cat’s claw are excellent herbs for reducing symptoms associated with CTS. Applying a hot castor oil pack for one to five hours at a time may also reduce pain and inflammation.
One of the most promising, non-surgical treatments for CTS available today is acupuncture, an ancient form of Chinese medicine dating back thousands of years. The National Institutes of Health reported promising results for treating CTS with acupuncture as early as ten years ago, and the community of qualified Chinese medical practitioners who undergo at least four years of extensive training in Chinese medicine have long attested to its efficacy. Acupuncture is believed to help restore normal nerve function and provide long-term relief of pain associated with this, and other chronic inflammatory syndromes. Common forms of acupuncture treatment include low-beam laser acupuncture, often accompanied by electrical stimulation (a painless administration of low-intensity current).
Finally, an injection of corticosteroid in the wrist may provide temporary relief of pain without surgery for those with moderate symptoms. Dr. Shawn Marshall of the University of Ottawa (Canada) found twelve published studies that confirmed a single injection of the steroid was, on average, more affective than a placebo for relieving pain. Concerns in the medical community over use of the shot have surrounded long-term damage to the nerves. It’s still controversial but, at the very least, practitioners recommend only short-term usage, and not to repeat the injection if it is ineffective the first time. Over the long-term, oral anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen, and using wrist splints, may be just as effective.
If you suspect that you may be afflicted with carpal tunnel syndrome, don’t be afraid to check it out with a qualified practitioner. Texas abounds with pain centers, acupuncturists, and other qualified physicians with a growing knowledge of the condition and the ability to help. If it’s caught early, the syndrome is reversible, and, with the proper precautions and dietary modifications, may never return.
How you treat and maintain your body when you’re young will certainly affect your health as you age, and eventually your wallet.
